Genetic variations influence our health and respond to medications and other interventions. Precision medicine involves understanding how factors from the environment interact with genetic variations to influence health. My research search for genetic-specific molecular features linked to disease and metabolic profiling as well as proteomic analyses in humans. These analyses will allow us to identify genetic-specific modifiable factors, a helpful knowledge for designing genetic disease prevention strategies, and aid in designing innovative drugs to target disease. One example is nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) disease. Familial clustering of NASH suggests that this disease is strongly influenced by heritable genetic factors. One of the challenges is that lack of a clear understanding of the genetic predisposition and molecular underpinnings linking NASH-associated HCC. To overcome this challenge, my research program utilized a large systematic search model for genetic defects associated with metabolic syndrome-related NASH. And then integrated genetically engineered mouse models to interrogate the molecular mechanisms of heritable genetic factors on NASH-associated HCC.
